Youth Sexual Violence and Abuse Steering Committee

The Honourable Mr Stanley Jones AO QC, former Justice of the Supreme Court, has been appointed Chair of the Youth Sexual Violence and Abuse Steering Committee.

As Chair of the Committee, Justice Jones is supported by Steering Committee members including heads of relevant state and federal government departments, key community representatives and a child safety advocate. The committee members were selected from across Queensland to provide a broad range of expertise and insight on the issue of youth sexual violence and abuse.

The Youth Sexual Violence and Abuse Steering Committee members are:

  • Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Director-General Clare O’Connor
  • Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Director-General Michael Hogan
  • Queensland Health Director-General Michael Walsh
  • Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Paul Taylor
  • Department of Premier and Cabinet Director-General Dave Stewart.

Australian Government representative

  • Associate Secretary of Indigenous Affairs with the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Andrew Tongue.

Local government representatives

  • Cr Dereck Walpo, Mayor of Aurukun
  • Cr Bob Manning OAM, Mayor of Cairns Regional Council.

Community and Peak representatives

  • Ms Rowena Bullio, from the Cairns West community
  • Ms Pattie Lees, Injilinji Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Children and Youth Services

Committee process

The Committee will be established for a period of up to 12 months to consider and report back on the efficiency and effectiveness of the activities of all tiers of government in response to youth sexual violence and abuse. The Committee will investigate the prevalence and impact of this issue more broadly across Queensland and make recommendations about the appropriateness of the responses to sexual violence and abuse.
