Cultural heritage search request

A cultural heritage database and register have been established under Part 5 of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (PDF) and the Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (PDF).

Persons carrying out activities that may impact on Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage can request information from the database and register by undertaking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage search request through the department's online portal. Note: please use Google Chrome for full functionality.

Persons undertaking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage search request must indicate which category of the duty of care guidelines (PDF, 566 KB) applies to the proposed activity.

A short description of any cultural heritage recorded on the database and register will be provided together with the contact details of the relevant Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander party for the search area.

It is important to note that a person does not necessarily satisfy the cultural heritage duty of care simply by undertaking a search of the database and register.
