Christene Roney

For Bowen woman Christene Roney, the only thing that rates close to her passion for the Brisbane Broncos is her desire to help others, especially the elderly.

Christene is currently working as the coordinator of the Girudala Community Cooperative's Home and Community Care program which provides much-needed support for some of the community's more vulnerable people.

"I love working with my clients and helping them," Christene said.

"I make sure they're looked after and they live a comfortable life in their older years."

In her role with Girudala Christene coordinates services to Indigenous and non-Indigenous seniors in her community, providing them with a range of services in their homes such as domestic assistance, home maintenance and transport.

"We also provide centre-based care which involves a lot of activities to get them out in the community," she said

"We have a book club where they can read books from our library and take them back to the group to do a book review. Clients also go on day trips out of town like Mackay, Airlie Beach or Townsville.

"It's rewarding work. Our staff do a great job."

Christene says she sees her role in aged care as an extension of her culture as a proud Aboriginal woman.

"Respect for our Elders is what drives you," she said.

"In today's society we lead busy lives but we should take the time to sit down and have quality time with our Elders."
