Chontelle George

At just 15 years of age, Chontelle George has her sight set on a big future.

The Mount Isa teen is sports mad, with keen interests in running, bull riding and motorbike riding. But for the moment, it's a dream of running professionally that has most of her attention.

"My goal is to go somewhere with my running and be an Olympian," she said.

"My Mum Kerry has kept me on the path of my sports with entering all kinds of sports and letting me know that I can do anything I put my mind to, which is how and why I participate in everything and always try everything once."

But Chontelle's sporting prowess isn't limited to the running track. She also recently competed in the Mount Isa Rodeo for bull riding and has had some big success on the basketball court.

"I went to Adelaide for basketball in 2011 and played in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Basketball Association National Basketball Championships," she said.

"This year I rode in the Mount Isa Rodeo - which is known as the largest rodeo this side of the southern hemisphere - in the Junior Bull Steer Riding competition. It was a major adrenaline rush!""

By day the sporting all-rounder gets a chance to get in some bull riding practice, during her day job on a local property.

"I am currently working on the land at Lawn Hills and Norfolk Stations, where I practise my bull riding and learn how to work the land."

Despite her obvious focus and determination to succeed, Chontelle maintains that she, just like most teenagers, still struggles with the pressures of adolescence.

"It can be hard being young and making my own good decisions with choosing friends, ways to act, ways to speak, what's right and what's wrong," she said.

"My mum guides me a lot but she is not with me every minute of the day so it is a massive challenge for teenagers to make these decisions with all the peer pressure that surrounds us every day.

"But when you have a goal, you have to go for it and don't let anyone hold you back, because you can be what you want to be.

"I am young, black and deadly and can be what I want to be and achieve what I want to achieve. I have my whole life ahead of me."
