Rhonda Sandow

Rhonda Sandow is on a life journey with her son, Chris.

Chris is an outstanding NRL halfback, playing for the South Sydney Rabbitohs but signed to Parramatta from 2012 on a four-year contract.

Rhonda remains firmly rooted to the family's home town, Cherbourg, where she's busy helping other young people to develop their lives.

She's the Coordinator at Cherbourg-Murgon YACCA (Youth and Community Combined Action) - offering programs to help young people develop life skills and to avoid negative behaviour. In fact, the last 16 years have been spent helping Cherbourg's young people and Rhonda's grateful that Chris was so understanding and willing to share his mum with others who needed her help.

While Rhonda had Chris at a young age, she realised the importance of being there for young people. Rhonda supported her son to complete year 12. Once Chris's rugby league career took off, Rhonda was able to go back to education and complete her Diploma of Community Services and Certificate IV in Business (Governance) at TAFE. It was a way of formalising her work and life experience. And now it's being used to good effect.

"There are a lot of young people in this community who've got talent just as my son has," she said.

"I feel love is really important in the upbringing of young people and that's what my son had. I feel as if he and I are on this journey - we've both had obstacles we've had to overcome, but we've done it."
