Aunty Gloria Fisher

Aunty Gloria was born in Brisbane and is from the Badtjala Tribe, and had ties to the Malaita (East of Guadal Canal, Solomon Island), Irish and New Caledonian (Noumea).

Aunty Gloria is a proud mother of five children, who have blessed her with eight grandchildren and one great grandson.

“My greatest achievement in life is knowing that all my children are successful and can look after themselves if anything were to happen to me”.

Growing up Aunty Gloria never had the opportunity to receive an education however at the age of 66 decided to enrol into Deakin University in Geelong, Victoria to undertake a Diploma of Natural and Cultural Resources Management.

Going to university Aunty Gloria faced many challenges however with the support of the teachers, other Indigenous students and family she managed to push through and found it was all worth it in the end. Aunty Gloria will be one of four to graduate this year along with her sister Shirley Summers.

"Successfully completing university is one of my greatest achievements and something I am proud of, if I can do it at this age you can too”.

Aunty Gloria plays an active role in the community and has a strong passion to create strong communities to improve the lives and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In sharing her story she hopes to inspire other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to achieve their dreams.

Aunty Gloria is proud of her Aboriginality and lives by the quote “B. A. D GIRLS” which stands for:
