Leon Nehow

I was born to a South Sea Islander father who grew up in Halifax and an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander mother from the Atherton Tablelands. I am the eldest with one sister and three brothers. I was raised in Atherton and completed all of my schooling in Atherton. My working parents were role models for my education and employment ethics.

I am a Christian and I fellowship regularly. When I was a Youth Worker and I started a Youth Drop in Centre which was very successful. Through this initiative I received an Australia Day Award in 2000 - Young Person of the Year Award.

I married in 1996 and I now have three sons. In 2001, I joined the Department of Corrective Services and commenced at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre as a Custodial Correctional Officer. In 2003 I transferred to Maryborough Correctional Centre. Not only did I learn a lot about people behaviours but I learnt a lot about myself. Due to shift work, I ceased employment at Maryborough Correctional Centre in 2008.

Since moving to Maryborough, I developed my music ability. I do Solo Acoustic performances and have been lead vocalist and guitarist in numerous bands.

For the past two years I have been the Music Director for the Hervey Bay Carols by Candle Light. This event has attracted up to 10,000+ people in the past. I am responsible for selecting 15 musicians, assisting with songs/carol choice, organising sheet music, song arrangements, stage set up, specifying PA requirements and communicating and collaborating with Fraser Coast Regional Council and other key stakeholders.

I am a community minded person and I strongly encourage the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to be engaged and actively participate in all aspects of the community, I believe this not only benefits our children but also promotes healthy communities for the future.
