Betty Sykes

My name is Betty Sykes. I was born in Cooktown and grew up in the Ayton and Bloomfield area. I went to school at Bloomfield State School and then to Warwick High School south of Brisbane.

My father's family totem is the Eagle.

At 17 I worked at the post office and then I met Clive, my partner. I have four children. Two grown and two at school. I also look after my sister's daughter.

I have been learning to bead with Doreen Creek using seeds from the forest and also semi-precious stones and shells. I also do painting and am really enjoying the art form. I hope to see more young talented girls and boys enjoying these arts.

On 8 November, 2011 we had the opening of the Wujal Wujal Art and Cultural Centre (Bana Yirriji). It was deadly because we had most of the Mayors from the different communities and other visitors and the community people of Wujal Wujal. It was good see everyone here.
