2007-08 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Budget Package
The package highlights the range of initiatives that collectively reflect the Queensland Government's commitment to tackling Indigenous disadvantage and improving the quality of life for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.
The whole-of-government budget initiatives are based on a partnership involving all Government Ministers and Directors-General working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders, with a particular focus on practical initiatives in areas including health, education and justice.
Key whole-of-government directions in the 2007-08 Queensland Budget include:
- Improving the standard of housing and the housing options available to Indigenous people in rural and remote communities.
- Creating opportunities to engage with the real economy, with targeted funding for education and employment initiatives and support for enterprise development.
- Improving child protection in communities, reducing family violence and substance and alcohol misuse, and providing healing and counselling services for people affected by family violence and crime.
- Improving the justice system by strengthening diversionary programs for Indigenous offenders and supporting Murri Courts and Indigenous Community Justice Groups.
While much more work is required, this package reaffirms the Government's commitment to Indigenous Queenslanders.
